The aim of this study was to determine the clinical relevance of cardiac biomarkers [troponin I and T, creatine kinase-MB fraction (CK-MB) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH)] in premature calves with respiratory distress syndrome. Seventy premature calves were admitted to the clinic within 24 h after birth. Respiratory distress syndrome was diagnosed in premature calves by clinical examination and venous blood gas analysis. Ten healthy calves, aged 5 days, were used as control. Cardiac troponin I and T were analysed using ELISA and ELFA, respectively. Serum CK-MB and LDH were also analysed in an automatic analyser. The calves had low venous pH, pO2, O2 saturation and high pCO2 values consistent with dyspnoea, hypoxaemia, and inadequate oxygen delivery. Mean serum troponin I, troponin T, CK-MB and LDH levels were increased in the premature calves compared to the control group. In conclusion, the results in this study demonstrated that serum CK-MB, troponin I and troponin T concentrations could be used for evaluating myocardial injury in premature calves with respiratory distress syndrome

This study examines the dependency of ?use value? of enclosed outdoor spaces on some presumed factors, which are derived from an existing body of literature and earlier research results. The use value of enclosed outdoor spaces is described as a combination of, activity diversity, frequency of activities, use density and occupancy time. Physical features, enclosure, spatial layout, aesthetic/ visual quality, pedestrian movement, context, planned activities, period of time and user profile are considered as factors that can be influential on the use value. The problems of this research have been approached from the perspective of eco-behavioral approach. The case study was conducted at campus environments. This research proved that there are many factors which are influential on the use value of enclosed outdoor space; and these factors, every one of which has an effect on the use value to varying degrees, working together,  may establish an analysis model to determine and evaluate the use value of enclosed outdoor spaces. While proving the significance of the factors mentioned above, this study also revealed new effects such as proximity to the high activity buildings, visibility-the presence of good viewing areas, presence of other people, attachment to the space, and sittable and shaded space. The proposed model can also give guidance to the designer and orient future research as well.  Keywords: Enclosed outdoor spaces, use value, eco-behavioral approach, campus environment, factors and physical features

Long term absolute sea level changes at ANDENES and TREGDE tide gauges at Norwegian coasts are investigated by the analysis of the tide gauge and Continuous GPS time series. The spatial and temporal character of interannual to interdecadal sea level varitaions in tide gauge monthly mean sea level data and periodic signals in Continuous GPS height time series are determined by using Emprical Ortogonal Function and spectral analysis methods. The linear trends of both tide gauge and Continuous GPS height time series are calculated by harmonic analysis method with Least Squares Estimation. While no significant relative sea level trend is found at TREGDE, 2.04 ± 0.19 mm/year is found at ANDENES. While no significant absolute vertical movement is determined at TGDE and ANDE, the absolute vertical velocity of ANDO Continuous GPS station is 0.40 ± 0.10 mm/year and generally agrees with 0.89 mm/year land uplift determined by a Post Glacial Rebound model. The absolute sea level at ANDENES tide gauge is determined to be rising with a rate of 2.44 ± 0.21 mm/year by combining the vertical velocity of ANDE Continuous GPS station with the relative sea level trend. This value is consistent with the global sea level rise estimates which is in the order of 1-3 mm/year.Keywords: Absolute sea level, Continuous GPS, Emprical Orthogonal Function analysis, Spectral analysis.

The purpose of this study was to analyse the anger expression styles, the continuous anger and personality types of players who play football in the professional league. The research group consisted of 133 soccer players who are playing in sports teams in the Turkish Super League: Ankara Sport Club, Gençlerbirliði Sports Club and Hacettepe Sports Club in the first league, Turk Telekom sports in the second league, and Keçiören Gücü Sports and Ankarademir Sports playing in the third league in the 2008–2009 football season. The Eysenck personality inventory was modified to Turkish by Bayar in 19831, having been developed by Eysenck and Eysenck in 19752 and the continuous anger – anger style scale (SOTO) was modified to Turkish by Özer in 19943. The state trait anger scale (STAS) was originally developed by Spielberger in 19834. All these were used on soccer players participating in the study to determine the continuous anger and anger styles in this study. In the interpretation of data, a meaningfulness of p<0.05, was applied by using regression analysis, the Kruskal Wallis Test, the one-way variance analysis (ANOVA) test and the Tukey test to find the differences among the groups. The SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) programme was used to find the accounted values and to evaluate the data. According to the results of this study, regarding the education level variable, while there was a meaningful difference between the continuous anger sub-dimension and anger control sub-dimension than continuous anger – anger expression styles, no significant difference was found among personality type sub-dimensions (psychoticism, extrovert, neurotic, false). In addition, a significant relationship was found between psychoticism, extrovert, neurotic, and lie sub-dimensions and the personality type sub-dimensions of professional players’ constant anger-anger expression styles

Background: P wave dispersion is an independent predictor of atrial fibrillation. P wave dispersion is associated with inhomogeneous and discontinuous propagation of sinus impulses. The purpose of this study was to investigate P wave dispersion and transthoracic echocardiographic findings in elite women basketball players. Methods: We recruited 27 well-trained woman athletes with a training history of many years (11.9 ± 3.6 years). All of the athletes were elite women basketball players and they were regularly maintaining sportive activities and training programs. Twenty-six age and sex matched healthy sedentary subjects consisted of control group. The difference between P maximum and P minimum durations was defined as P wave dispersion. The echocardiographic parameters were assessed in detail in the standard left lateral decubitus position. Results: The body height, body weight, body surface area, metabolic equivalent, maximum P wave duration and P wave dispersion were increased in the elite basketball athletes as compared with healthy sedentary subjects. On the contrary; the heart rate, ejection fraction and interventricular septum thickness in diastole were decreased in athletes. The body height (p=0.006, r=0.37), body weight (p=0.04, r=0.28), body surface area (p=0.01, r=0.33) and heart rate (p=0.01, r=-0.32) were correlated with P wave dispersion. Conclusions: P wave dispersion was increased in elite woman basketball players as compared with healthy sedentary subjects. P wave dispersion was correlated with heart rate, body height, body weight and body surface area

    Get PDF
AbstractINTRODUCTIONHere, we present a case of gastric outlet obstruction due to focal nodular hyperplasia of the liver.PRESENTATION OF CASEA 23-year-old female presented to our emergency clinic with nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. Endoscopy showed that the prepyloric region of the stomach was externally compressed by a lesion. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a 70mm solid mass originating from the liver, extending caudally in an exophytic manner, and compressing the stomach. Laparotomy revealed an irregular and exophytic mass originating from the liver, which caused gastric outlet obstruction. The mass was resected with a 10mm safety margin. The histopathology report of the mass returned as focal nodular hyperplasia.DISCUSSIONGastric outlet obstruction is a clinical syndrome characterized by abdominal pain, nausea, and postprandial vomiting. This clinical condition frequently develops as a result of peptic ulcer disease, pyloric stenosis, and obstruction of pylorus by foreign bodies including phytobezoars, congenital duodenal webs, malignant disorders, and various lesions externally compressing the stomach. Gastric outlet obstruction due to hepatic lesions is extremely rare; few cases have been reported.CONCLUSIONThis is the first reported case of gastric outlet obstruction that developed due to focal nodular hyperplasia of the liver

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Denim sandblasting is as a novel cause of silicosis in Turkey, with reports of a recent increase in cases and fatal outcomes. We aimed to describe the radiological features of patients exposed to silica during denim sandblasting and define factors related to the development of silicosis.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Sixty consecutive men with a history of exposure to silica during denim sandblasting were recruited. All CT examinations were performed using a 64-row multi-detector CT (MDCT). The nodules were qualitatively and semi-quantitatively analyzed by grading nodular profusion (NP) on CT images.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Silicosis was diagnosed radiologically in 73.3% of patients (44 of 60). The latency period (the time between initial exposure and radiological imaging) and duration of silica exposure was longer in patients diagnosed with silicosis than in those without silicosis (p < 0.05). Nodules were present in all cases with centrilobular type as the commonest (63.6%). All cases of silicosis were clinically classified as accelerated and 11.4% had progressive massive fibrosis (PMF). Mild NP lesions were the most prevalent in all six zones of the lung. The NP score was significantly correlated with the duration of silica exposure, the latency period, presence of PMF, and pleural thickening. Enlarged lymphadenopathy was present in 45.5% of patients.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The duration of exposure and the latency period are important for development of silicosis in denim sandblasters. MDCT is a useful tool in detecting findings of silicosis in workers who has silica exposure.</p

Monocyte/high-density lipoprotein ratio predicts the mortality in ischemic stroke patients

    Get PDF
Objective The inflammatory process is a very important stage in the development and prognosis of acute ischemic stroke (AIS). The monocyte to high-density lipoprotein (HDL) ratio (MHR) is accepted as a novel marker for demonstrating inflammation. However, the role of MHR as a predictor of mortality in patients with AIS remains unclear. Methods We retrospectively enrolled 466 patients who were referred to our clinic within the first 24hours of symptom presentation and who were diagnosed with AIS between January 2008 and June 2016. Four hundred and eight controls of similar age and gender were also included. The patient group was classified into two groups according to 30-day mortality. The groups were compared in terms of monocyte counts, HDL, and MHR values. Results The patient group had significantly higher monocyte counts and lower HDL levels; therefore, this group had higher values of MHR compared to controls. Additionally, the monocyte count and MHR value were higher, and the HDL level was lower in non-surviving patients (p&lt;0.001). The MHR value was also observed as a significant independent variable of 30-day mortality in patients with AIS (p&lt;0.001). The optimum cut-off value of MHR in predicting the 30-day mortality for patients with AIS was 17.52 (95% CI 0.95–0.98). Conclusion Our study demonstrated that a high MHR value is an independent predictor of 30-day mortality in patients with AIS
